Pre-week 1 Run...ish

Technically the first week doesn't start until Monday but a sunny day came along and I felt so pumped about this commitment, the blog, the fundraising, that I decided to answer that nagging question of "surely I can run 1km, right?...right?". Yeah, well the answer is no. No I can't.

I headed down along the Mullum Mullum Creek, started at a walk while listening to Sunday Night Safran and then I suddenly felt warmed up, keen and ready to go...switched to Pearl Jam's 'Why Go' at full volume and unleashed the running beast within me!!

I got maybe 200m. Then I was tired.

I slowed back down to a walk, the music now seeming unduly energetic. "That's okay" I told myself "all good, first run, no one expected miracles, you know, it's something to build on". I'm a pretty good pep talker, but it's all cliches so I never really listen. Soon I went for another try, and got another 200m. By the third I was feeling pretty beat and decided a brisk walking pace was the order of the day.

To be honest, I was pretty disappointed. I started thinking crazy things like that I need to stop drinking beer and maybe cut back on my popcorn obsession.

I really love popcorn.
Definitely some changes need to be made. But I'm assuming they will happen naturally as I continue to run around. Haha, I'm not going to suddenly force myself into a healthy lifestyle, the shock may be just too much.

The good thing about this pre-training training session is that I worked out some ways of measuring how far I'm running. For one, there is an oval that I can run laps on, and it's about 400m a lap. There is also a nice bridge exactly a kilometre along the track from my starting point. So my goal is to run all the way to that bridge by the end of next week with no breaks. Might have to download 'Eye of the Tiger' for the iPod.

Well, that's the starting point. 5kms walk/run in 45mins with only 25% of that being running in sporadic bursts. Should not be hard to beat, but will I get from here to 20kms by October? Only time will tell.
