The Mission
The Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, where I volunteer, hold an annual fundraiser called 'Run For Refugees'. Basically, a bunch of people run a lot through the streets of Melbourne, well before I get out of bed, and people pay them to do it. All the money then goes to the ASRC. Great stuff.

Well, for some reason this year I decided to join them.

It was a Wednesday evening, I was glued to the couch and attempting to avoid my studies somehow, anyhow. There was wine involved. One thing led to another and I found myself thinking it a good idea to join Run For Refugees. 'Why not?' I asked myself, 'they have a 5km category and a 10km, and even a 3km walk if I can't survive anything else...what the hey, let's do this!' So I signed up online.

Seeing as my studies were still looming moments later, I decided that it was best I share my decision to run on every social platform I had. So I posted this to Facebook:

Then I sent out a similar message in email format to friends, relatives, and work colleagues. Support started flooding in and I was surprised by how enthusiastic everyone seemed...and then...then, someone mentioned that a marathon is 42kms.

Yep, I had no idea that a marathon was a specific length. I just thought it meant 'running in a group' and now I had told everyone I knew that I was going to attempt the impossible task of an entire marathon. What a dumbass. No wonder they were all so excited.

To remedy the situation I had to send out follow-up posts and emails, but I couldn't bring myself to pull it all the way back to my first intentions of 3, 5, or 10km. So I announced I would run a half marathon.
Still a dumbass.

I've done the math and there are 23 weeks until race day. This means that each week I will have to up my personal best by one kilometer if I'm to survive the run and keep my promises. I'm completely unsure of whether this is possible or even what my current rate of fitness is...surely I could run 1km, right? ...right?

Ah well, it's all for a good cause and I'm sure my confused and sweaty efforts will bring you all much amusement in the meantime. If you can spare a few bob, even the price of a beer, then please click the donate button and add to my fundraising kitty. The more cash that goes in there the more my confidence will grow and the greater my powers of running shall become.

Cheers,
Katie M
